My issues are that the download from Yaesu doesn't include a '.exe' file so I can't start the download process.

Also, I'm not sure of the total process from end to end (install driver, plug in USB to computer and radio...) - the instructions from Yaesu seem to be for Windows8...

Step-by-step

You download the file. Then, for ease, make a new folder on your desktop called, "710" or "Fred" or anything you want. Either move the downloaded file to this new folder or extract all the files into the new folder. There will be instructions giving you the directions, but here is a copy/paste of the basics.

INSTALLING
----------
The VCP driver is automatically installed by Windows Update for CP210x with
alternate PID values of 0xEA63, 0xEA7A, and 0xEA7B. These are not default
values.

Otherwise, unzip the .zip file and you will have a directory containing the
driver installer files.

### Prompted install ###

If Windows prompts you to install a driver for a CP210x device
(for example, if you plug a CP210x into your computer):

1. Use the dialog to browse for the driver location
2. Locate the driver folder (that you previously unzipped)
3. Follow the instructions

### Manual install ###

1. Using Windows File Explorer, locate the driver folder
(that you previously unzipped)
2. Right click on the silabser.inf file and select Install
3. Follow the instructions

There are more instructions here than you'll need. I think that when you click on the Setup information it takes it from there. Then, when you look at your device manager they will be there.

OK, if you look and see the USB 5 on the Vara audio in and out, that only means the USB port on the computer itself that the cable is plugged in to. Not the virtual comm ports.

<span style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">switched RPTT Select of Off. I have two headsets that are recognized by my FTM-300 but won't connect. My mobiles can't connect to the bluetooth in my vehicles. The USB on my FTdx101mp works with very few keyboards and mice.

I am a die hard Yaesu fan and own 10 radios and various accessories. Yaesu is one of the most active equipmpent manufacturers. You would think they could make the USB and bluetooth accessories more robust and thereby, more useful. I have purchased and installed the optional bluetooth boards for my mobiles that did not have the feature. So far, I just don't think that the functionality warrants spending any additional money on it or the USB since it so limited.

I know the FTM-500 is on the way. I wish instead of a couple of new radios per year, they would take some time out and fix the implementation issues in the USB and bluetooth functionality in the current products. I would really appreciate that over another radio with a user interface that is not consistent with previous models.
I have similar Bluetooth and USB comments for my FT5DR.
No excuses should be made for this model, it was released in 2021 as far as i can tell.
According to the manual it has Bluetooth 4.2.
BT standard 4.2 dates back to 2014
BT standard 5.0 dates back to 2016
BT standard 5.1 dates back to 2019
BT standard 5.2 devices were coming to market in 2020.
In a high quality device like the FT5DR why build it with an ancient BT chip?

Looking at the USB connector
USB C has been around since 2015.
USB Micro since 2007
and yet the FT5DR has a USB mini connector for data.

I only earned my licence a year ago and cannot believe how many years some models have been in production (unchanged). While I sat on the fence about the 818 it was discontinued. If I buy one of the remaining ones its successor will be announced a month later with better features and will only cost a few dollars more

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0Toronto, ON, Canada43.653226 -79.383184315.342992163821151 -114.5394343 71.963459836178842 -44.226934299999996tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4494447019652216531.post-9072916153296650412023-03-09T05:37:00.014-08:002023-04-29T16:32:41.811-07:00Fan Noise Sound Response from Yaesu FT710

Fan Response from Yaesu FT710
emailed tech support about the constant annoying fan noise. I timed it, fan starts 8 to 10 minutes after power on with NO transmit. Never turns off. It is really loud and annoying.

The answers received were frankly, BS. They don't want to admit the issue. Asked me about "ambient temp" and what modes I was using. Explained AGAIN it is receive only and no transmitting was done. In an air conditioned shack. I think we are stuck with it for now.

I noted the fan issue in one of my videos. The fan turns on at power up and stays on for approximately 28 out of every 30 minutes. I watched it for 2 hours, receive only. I spoke with Rodger in tech support. He surmised that the transceiver needs realignment. But this one is on loan from HRO, to film my tutorial series. It will go back to HRO.

Well, to all you experts and thermal engineers: The rig was returned from Yaesu and the problem was solved. Zero fan noise now. Radio has been on for over an hour on RX and silent as a church mouse.

If your 710 fan starts up and makes an annoying tone on receive, send it back. It is fixable.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0Toronto, ON, Canada43.653226 -79.383184315.342992163821151 -114.5394343 71.963459836178842 -44.226934299999996tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4494447019652216531.post-46800247377868077662023-03-08T16:36:00.005-08:002023-04-29T16:37:29.510-07:00Yaesu FT-710 audio settingUntil installing the new firmware I was about ready to give up on this radio and try to return it as defective. So many issues. Even after the upgrade the audio level does not operate in a linear manner and the other issue I have had since day one, and still have, is poor transmit audio. I have spent hours on the air working with friends and listing to my own transmissions and have never got the audio to sound anywhere near as good as my 991A. At this point I certainly wouldn't recommend this rig to a friend. Don WB8SCG

Yaesu radios are capable of great TX audio. Be sure you have mic EQ enabled. It is off by default. Here is s video that covers TX audio.
https://youtu.be/V3wIv-xfMu4

Are you using the same mic on the 991a for the tests? I know, that's probably a dumb question, but I found I was using a Yaesu MD-100 that proved defective after borrowing an identical mic from a friend. The radio is producing excellent audio now ... But, I will say adjusting the Parametric EQ is indeed challenging. Since I previously owned an FT-2000D, I knew a lot about how to get good audio out of this complicated Yaesu system.

One thing that really assisted me was using Win4Yaesu software, which includes a graphical presentation of the Parametric and P-Parametric (w/Proc) EQ for low, medium, and high response. This allows you to "drag" sliders to position the audio frequency response of any mic to the sweet spot for your voice, rather than the tedious menus on the radio. Once adjusted, you can save the settings to the SD card. I now have (3) different mic EQ's saved that can easily be re-loaded when I change mics.

PS: the hand mic that came with the 710 is very basey and I simply couldn't get it to sound like me, listening on headphones; always too much bass.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0Canada56.130366 -106.34677127.820132163821157 -141.503021 84.440599836178848 -71.190521tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4494447019652216531.post-2756395961430043042023-02-16T13:37:00.011-08:002023-03-10T14:02:20.289-08:00Amateur Radio ground your station to the main house ground outside your house
Amateur Radio ground your station to the main house ground outside your house.

I have always been told NOT to ground your
station to the main house ground outside
your house below you outdoor breaker box.
It could be dangerous.

PS. Ground current from a faulty appliance could be coupled into your radio.

The earth you describe in the P.S. is perfect. "I am currently grounding my ground bar in the shack to 4 ground rods tied together outside my shack window, using #6 solid bare copper."
It is much more than I have. I used a single earth rod near my tower with 10mm wire back to the shack.

I
recommend a wire out to an earth rod or rods as described by Hubert.
Connect it to a brass (preferably) earth bar and wire leads to your ham
gear in a star formation, not a daisy chain. i.e. everything gets its
own wire back to the earth bar. Actually, I do not practice what I
preach because I only earthed my linear amplifier and rely on the coax
braid to pass that through to my rig. I'm bad I know! But we don't get a
lot of lightning here, and I disconnect the antennas if there is a
storm.

You have a good start to your grounding system, but it’s incomplete and could create a fire hazard.

All your earth grounds should be bonded together via a perimeter wire.
This means you need to connect the earth ground at your service panel
to the earth ground for your radios. Otherwise, if there is a break in
the wire connecting your electrical service panel, a voltage spike on
your incoming power line, instead of being routed to earth ground at the
service panel, can go through your house wiring, through your radios,
and out to the earth ground provided by your four ground rods outside
the shack window. (I had such a break in my service panel earth ground
and didn’t know it until I installed my perimeter ground and discovered
the electrical contractor had NEVER CONNECTED the copper wire from the
service panel to its grounding rod. There was not even a clamp there,
just 2 inches of buried copper wire. Of course, the open end of the
wire and the rod were both buried, so who would ever think to check?)

Check out the ARRL book on Grounding and Bonding. It’s very informative.

Ward Silver, author of the ARRL book, has a YouTube video at
https://youtu.be/rTGFfvYjI0o

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0Toronto, ON, Canada43.653226 -79.383184315.342992163821151 -114.5394343 71.963459836178842 -44.226934299999996tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4494447019652216531.post-39721134011379271122023-02-16T05:57:00.020-08:002023-03-13T06:02:40.357-07:00FT8 on WSJT-X Yaesu FT-710Yaesu FT-710 FT8 on WSJT-X

Have a problem (of all things).

Got my new 710 set up on FT8 this morning, made some 40 m contacts. now the problem is (my guess) in the 710's configuration. Beside it
there are a 897 and a 450, both using the rear DATA connection. The
configuration for both have been reviewed and "translated" after reading
the manual to 710 configuration, of course changing the connection from
REAR to USB. It seems that something is missing or there is a
misunderstanding, because the 710 changes to TX but power output is 0.
Tested
also with WSJT and the voice keyer avalaible in Logger32, the 710
changes to TX but no power output. Selecting a external USB sound card, I
can hear the outgoing audio, so as I wrote before, my guess is that
something is missing in my configuration.

The 710 has a RTTY/DATA connection, it could be tested, but having an USB port it is the very last test.

My QTH does
not allow decent power and Antenna installations. So I am considering
to use the club station remotely. Specific questions that I have include:

Will Audio be transmitted? (I mainly do SSB)

What software do I need? Is there something on Linux available?

Do digital modes work? (I use WSJTX and FLDIGI)

Ive used several methods of remote operation under Windozw but all
digital only (no speech) Team Viewer free version, Real VNC (limited
time linked per session and a bit slow running) Currently using Rust
Desk and looking to set up my own server (advantage better speed lag) If
using Linux much better support for remote operation particularly on
own network. Also Rust works on IOS and Android phones. Advantages of
Rust is that can work both ways and its easier to set up than most.

The only issue with the FT-710 would be if you try to rely on the CAT
commands. For light work, it is tolerable. Anything more, it is a
bear.

I have written software to control the FT-891, FT-991a,
and FT-dx10. I have played with other Yaesu radios with similar CAT
formats with no issues.

Too make a long story short, the FT-710 cannot take concatenated commands. The other radios do no problem.

Not as simple as that... This bug then presents itself if "Auto
Information" is enabled ("AI1;"). Then when you are streaming S-Meter
readings and start changing the VFO you start receiving RM readings, IF
readings, and FA readings. They start getting corrupted quite often.
It appears that while transmitting one command, then next command
writes over the serial transmit buffer after about 4 characters or so.

The alternative is to disable Auto Information and poll for messages.
Though, you need to set the poll rate to about 20 mS so you don't
expose this bug in the radio.

But if you just want to remote access the radio, I've heard Skype is a good choice, it auto answers and does 2-way voice.

In the case of WSJT-x, the turn off auto-information so this stops
unsolicited commands from the radio. Then by pausing between commands,
by approximately 20mS then back to back commands will work.

If
you're trying to remote control your radio, if you decide to POLL your
radio, then as long as no one is local to the machine you would not need
to worry about local changes not being reflected on your control
station.

In my case, I expect S-Meter readings, VFO changes, etc.
to be presented in real time. There are too many variables in the
radio to poll for all of them.

Here is an example of the corruption. For benign things not a big
deal, but if you cannot detect the error then you may incorrectly act
upon corrupted data.

now the problem is (my guess) in the 710's configuration. Beside it
there are a 897 and a 450, both using the rear DATA connection. The
configuration for both have been reviewed and "translated" after reading
the manual to 710 configuration, of course changing the connection from
REAR to USB.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0Toronto, ON, Canada43.653226 -79.383184315.342992163821151 -114.5394343 71.963459836178842 -44.226934299999996tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4494447019652216531.post-19790326068606769052023-01-23T13:49:00.018-08:002023-03-10T14:02:20.289-08:00RTTY with FT-710

Basic question from someone who has not used RTTY since the surplus terminal days in early 70s.

Do
I need special hardware, Terminal or interface, to transmit and receive
RTTY with the FT-710? Or is there some software similar to WSJT that
will let me do it with the radio and software?

Working FT-8 with
FT-710 and WSJT-X was so easy. Never tried FT-8 before but got WAS

So far I've only tried Vara HF with it.

About
half the time I get an issue where I can see Vara hears the audio for a
second or so then kicks off. To remedy this I have to go to the Sound
Control Panel and click on the speaker section, then just click OK and
get back out of the screen and then Vara magically starts to hear the
audio.

I have never gotten it to transmit anything though. I've
tried different combinations of radio that I've read on here and
elsewhere. Right now in Winlink it's set up as a 991A. I don't have
Winlink in front of me right now to remind what other radios I've
chosen. The 891 was one of them. I can't remember what else is listed
that I've tried. So far, I've only made things worse. Once I try to
transmit Winlink slows to a crawl, no longer does is do the click click,
click click, click click of trying to connect, but it goes click
(several seconds pass) click, then doesn't try again for about a
minute. Along with that issue it has never let me adjust the ALC, it's
always at zero, and when it does try to transmit the most power I've
seen it use is zero watts.

https://groups.io/g/ft-710

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0Toronto, ON, Canada43.653226 -79.383184315.342992163821151 -114.5394343 71.963459836178842 -44.226934299999996tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4494447019652216531.post-5531554904971862312023-01-18T06:11:00.012-08:002023-03-13T06:22:46.693-07:00Yaesu CW audio and DSP settings for low signalsYaesu Ft-710 CW audio and DSP settings for low signals

<span face=""Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); background-color: white; caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); color: #333333; font-size: 14px;"> am new to the FT-710 and operate CW .
